FAQ
Quick answers to common questions.
What is TheHorn?
A menu bar app for macOS. Hold a shortcut, speak, release, and your words are typed into whatever app and field you're using.
What do I need to run it?
A Mac running macOS 26 or later, since it relies on Apple's on-device speech and language model features.
What's the default shortcut?
Hold Fn. You can change it in Setup from the menu bar icon.
Does my voice leave my Mac?
No. Speech is transcribed on your device and audio is never saved or uploaded. See the privacy policy.
Why does it ask for Accessibility permission?
To type text into the app you're using and to undo it. Without it you can still Copy the result. Grant it from Setup → Accessibility.
Why does it ask for Microphone permission?
So it can hear you while the shortcut is held. Nothing is recorded outside that.
What are the rewrite styles?
Literal keeps exactly what you said. Concise and Polished tidy it up using Apple's on-device model. When a rewrite is used, the review window shows what changed.
Can I check the text before it's typed?
Yes. Turn on the review window in Setup and you'll get a preview to edit, Copy or Insert. Otherwise text is typed as soon as you release.
It typed something wrong. Can I undo it?
Yes. Use Undo in the toast right after insertion. It removes exactly the text TheHorn typed, even in apps with no undo of their own.
Nothing was typed. Why?
If no text field is focused, or the field is a password field, TheHorn won't type. It shows your text so you can Copy it instead. Also check that Accessibility is granted.
Does it keep a history?
Only if you turn it on. History stays on that device and is deleted after 30 days, or sooner when you delete it.
What is the dictionary?
Your own names and terms, so they're recognised and kept intact in rewrites. It syncs between your devices through your private iCloud, and you can import and export it.
Which languages are supported?
The languages Apple's on-device speech supports. Pick one in Setup; if it isn't installed, TheHorn will tell you.
